Description

Oil painting on canvas - 46x55 cm (18x22 inch)

3 years between the original sketch and this oil painted version have helped the concept mature. But it still remains a bit blurry to me, which is not the usual way I process.
Normally I work out the idea and concept until it sounds very clear and coherent, then comes the sketch, and finally the painted artwork.
This one started out as a random sketch and evolved in a very free manner, much like a abstract thinking. But the various symbolistic elements had always been very obvious to me, without being able to explain what they meant. Same for the title: despite its surreal sounding it came out to me in a totally evident manner.

Somehow, like a self-psychoanalysis, I've tried to extract the possible meanings of the character I've happened to create, and tried to understand what she had to tell us.
She is young, and her youth would mean fragility, but she was also given the responsibility of being a Queen, which forces her to hide her fragility behind a severe and cold face.
Inside she suffers from an untold secret, that scares her as much as she can't reveal it.
The kingdom she's reigning over is the realm of man's madness towards progress. The youth and vitality she has always invested in pushing humanity forward has started to get diseased by the eagerness, the lack of trust and wisdom of her people.
Despite the intrinsic force given to her crown she knows she'll be too weak and too young to counter the faith. Love without trust, wisdom without power, that terrible secret she holds behind her feverish forehead is that her kingdom is bound to doom.
The precious sphere, filled with 3/4 water, will no longer be her scepter. Humanity has claimed independence along the path toward her own destruction.

I hope you guys will like the story and appreciate the art. Cheers.

Beautfiul piece of work MIchael. Awesome!

The only detail that's intriguing me is your light sources? Your primary light source (from the viewer's perspective) is coming in from the west or north-west, or from over the viewer's left shoulder (I'm looking at the collar, lapel and blouse that are casting shadows on her right breast area), yet the shadow cast by the chain she's holding with her left hand is coming from a light source from the north-north-east, or from over the viewers' right shoulder.

Also the shadows cast on the center lacings again suggest more than one light source. Is this deliberate? * Note: Mark Xris as trouble-maker * :p

This is the first time I have ever queried a technical detail on an artists work here (I don't like nit-pickers at the best of times :p ), but I'm curious about this one, because your work is so carefully executed, deliberate and detailed.

Well done. It's a truly remarkable piece of work! +10
Cheers, Xris

I have absolutely fallen in love with this piece. It's the most fantastic thing ive seen in a long time and for some reason its struck a strange chord with me. I just love how her eyes follow you around and its like shes staring into your soul or something it's so wierd. I love how i've just sat and stared at it for 15 mins mainly at the detail and how wonderful it is.. just gives me warm fuzzy feelings i just absolutely love it!!!

I dont usually post comments or anything but i just had to say something! sorry if i come off as a bit wierd ;P I just love it and now i am your biggest fan ha ;P I'm not fussy about lighting and stuff as long as the end result gives a person a feeling or makes a connection with people thats all that matters.. Theres just so much emotion in the picture even though she doesnt have a distinguishable expression.. like shes smiling and scared and all sorts all at the same time :) its just lovely well done

GFXartist sponsor Xris : u're right about the light source thing. I've been fooled by the fact that the portrait was in the diagonal, and made mistakes. The error is the shadow casted by the chain on the top of her left breast (on viewer's right). Every other hilight and shadow must be quite in place, I think.

Highfive. Thank you! But it didn't took me 3 years in the making. I've posted a sketch once, and decided 3 years later to make an oil painting of it. The making took me one month actually, which make it the quickest painting I have ever painted.

ReBeLKiMyThank you ^_^ . Thanks for being my new biggest fan. It scares me a bit, though. ;)

Thanks for putting up with me Michael... Regardless, I've dropped it into my fav's just the same :p

And wanted to say again just how awesome this painting is. It's always good to know that the traditional 'wet' mediums are still being crafted - oils in particular not being the easiest of them. Clever fella! :p

Unbelievably brilliant! Especially since it was done in oils on canvass. Was your canvass smooth before you started this? as I can imagine the weave would only inhibit you when applying such tiny details.

Also, how did you get such a good image of it onto the computer?

Outstanding traditional work.

dude, your something else hey! just mind blowing! 1 tiny crit though; this is EXTREMELY minor. just her right pupil and iris needs to be lightened very very slightly to balance with her other pupil and iris. other than that, its 100% flawless! incredible in every aspect!

the range of hues you have been able to achieve is absolutely stunning. i love the sphere...

2 crits:
- There are no real shadow areas...granted, there seems to be an overall light source, I would like to see some darks, like in the ears and nostrils. the value you used in the hue is more of a midtone, than shadow
- her eyes... they look forced wide open and yet her hand looks relaxed holding the object. contradictory expressions I'm getting from her. perhaps, if both eyelids were slightly squinted, it would have added a more compelling and stronger expression

+9

Wonderful job! I absolutely love the cloak/cape/whatever thingy - the collar is terrific! I also like everything happening around her head (the hair wound around various accessories) as well as the colors you've used. The eyes, though, capture the attention first and it's hard to look away from them for long. And I have no idea why, since she doesn't appear meanacing, but I find her eyes quite frightening. Huh. I have no explaination for that! :) Again, wonderful piece!

Fabulous story and even more so fabulous painting! I have found often enough, that outwardly fradgile persons tend to mask inward steel and courage. They just haven't found the ability or confidence yet to believe. It seems to me she holds the weight of the world, but she isn't broken, isn't bending any more than needs be. And she seems level headed, clear gaze. Amazing!

Well...no real critique....I was going to say it might be nice darken the background just behind and above the shoulders to add more depth to the image, but....there's already so much detail, interest, and depth it works...and works well...I really enjoy the attention to detail...

I do appreciate the fact you told us more about this painting. I like to know about the genesis of the artwork I'm in love with... And how would I not fall in love with such a human, deep and strong female character? I also appreciate the fact that, as a male artist, you made a refreshing interpretation of a young woman's portrait. You portrayed a clever woman. A woman with responsibilities. Of course, in a dreamy and imaginative world; a world where she would be treated as a Queen, despite her youth or sex. I'm not a painter so I would be unable to give you an useful technical critic; but I think once again you used colours at perfection. Coolness, Nature, beauty and contemplation... are as many signs of your obvious romanticism. Chapeau bas! Si je pouvais, j'achèterais toutes tes reproductions! En attendant de pouvoir le faire, je replonge, une fois de plus, dans "Home and the Fairies"...
